Athletic Council
The council is charged in the faculty handbook with recommending to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty policies regarding the Skidmore Athletic program, "including the determination of the scope and level of competition in intercollegiate, club, and intramural sports; eligibility rules; establishment of priorities for the athletic program; and such other matters as may be brought up to the Council's attention by the Athletic Director or by any of the constituent groups of the college community." The Athletic Council met several times during the fall and twice during the spring, to discuss eligibility matters and compliance with Title IX (gender equity) in Skidmore's athletic program. At the end of December the members of Athletic Council worked with Chuck Joseph and the Dean of Studies Office on revising a new Athletic Eligibility proposal based on a joint draft from May 2001 with the addition of some language proposed by Jeff Segrave. The proposal was submitted to Chuck Joseph and is now implemented as policy. Following the recommendations articulated in the ARC Report, Athletic Council also worked, together with the Admissions Office, and CASA, on an Athletic Admissions Policy. The proposal was submitted to Chuck Joseph and is now implemented as policy. Athletic Council's assessment and recommendations about the Gender Equity Report issued by consultant Janet Judge in June of 2002 called for the creation of a subcommittee to thoroughly study and analyze the report. The subcommittee was constituted in the fall of 2002, and it finalized a new set of recommendations by December 2002. The Gender Equity Report, and the subcommittee study have been handed to the Dean of the Faculty. A new consultant has been hired by the Dean's Office to review both reports. As the outgoing chair I would like to thank all the members of Athletic Council for their commitment, honesty, and patience in a year in which things seemed to move slower than we all wanted.
