Committee on Academic Freedom and Rights
Annual Report for 1998-1999
June 29, 1999
Submitted by Mary Zeiss Stange, Chair

The Committee on Academic Freedom and Rights met twelve times during the 1998-1999 academic year. Two faculty and one staff person sought the assistance of the committee. After informal inquiries were held in these three cases, one faculty opted not to pursue formal charges, and it is unclear whether the staff person will or will not pursue a formal complaint. The other faculty complaint, along with a student inquiry that occurred too late in the year for the committee to take it under consideration, will carry over to the 1999-2000 Committee.

In addition, the Committee met once with the Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure, to deliberate changes in the Faculty Handbook language relating to the purpose and uses of Chairs' annual letters of evaluation for tenure-track faculty. The language drafted in this meeting was approved by a vote of the faculty at the April 30, 1999 Faculty Meeting.
