COMMITTEE ON APPOINTMENTS, PROMOTIONS, AND TENUREAnnual Report 1998-99Submitted by Mark C. Hofmann, Chair, August 12, 1999The Committee on Appointments, Promotion and Tenure met 46 times during the 1998- 99 academic year. A summary of the Committee's activities follows. TENURE: CAPT evaluated the credentials of six candidates for tenure. Aldo Vacs served as the alternate. CAPT recommended to the President that all six be granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. The President concurred with this recommendation and the Board of Trustees granted tenure to these six candidates. PROMOTIONS: In January and February, CAPT evaluated the credentials of three faculty members recommended for promotion from Associate Professor to Professor. Aldo Vacs served as the alternate. CAPT recommended that two members be promoted to Professor. CAPT also evaluated the credentials of one candidate for promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and recommended promotion for one candidate. In September, CAPT recommended that three faculty members who had completed the requirements for their doctoral degrees be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor. The President concurred with these decisions and the Board of Trustees approved these promotions. REAPPOINTMENTS: In February, CAPT evaluated the credentials of one faculty member for which the Dean of the Faculty's and the Department's recommendation on third year reappointment differed. CAPT recommended to the President reappointment for one candidate. The President concurred. ENDOWED CHAIRS: In October and November, CAPT met with the President and the Dean to consider the credentials of nominees for seven endowed chairs. The President announced the appointments in late November. HONORARY DEGREES: CAPT reviewed the credentials of thirteen candidates for honorary degrees and approved all thirteen. PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH: CAPT met five times in October with the faculty representatives on the Presidential search committee to discuss the search. CAPT met twice with the candidate for President. MOTIONS: CAPT brought to the floor of the faculty a motion to amend the Faculty Handbook. The motion was to amend the following in the handbook: The description of the faculty, the procedure for third year reappointment of tenure track faculty, the procedure for reappointment of teaching associates, the procedure for notice of termination of certain non-tenure track appointments, the description of the sources of information that CAPT secures information from in tenure cases, and the procedures for annual letters of evaluation of nontenured faculty. The faculty approved the motion at the April 30'h faculty meeting. OTHER ACTIVITIES: In September, CAPT held a meeting with new faculty to discuss the criteria and procedures for reappointment and tenure. CAPT met with the President, the Dean of the Faculty and the Assistant to the Dean of the Faculty for Faculty Development to discuss issues related to faculty development and faculty evaluation. In March, representatives of CAPT met with the candidates for the director of the MALS program. In April, CAPT met with the 1999 tenure candidates to explain policies and procedures, review the CAPT calendar, and answer any questions the candidates might have. Representatives of CAPT met with the Committee of Committees three times in the course of the academic year. A representative of CAPT met with the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees in February to discuss the Committee's tenure recommendations. CAPT met with the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees in May to discuss tenure and promotion procedures and other items of mutual interest to the faculty and to the Board of Trustees. In May, CAPT met with Academic Staff to discuss tenure and promotion procedures and other items of mutual interest to the faculty.
