CAS Annual Report 2002-2003

The Committee on Academic Standing (CAS) had 26 regular weekly meetings during the past year, plus 2 Academic Review meetings (one at the end of each semester.) In addition parts of the committee met on an ad-hoc basis or conducted business electronically for purposes of the appeal processes and/or other issues.

During this period, the committee received many requests for action and appeals. In order to facilitate enumerating them below, we have made some simplifications. For example, in counting the leave requests, we have not distinguished between 1-semester leaves and full-year leaves. Along with the huge number of medical leaves granted comes a large number of automatic late withdrawals and drops from courses - we have not distinguished between a drop and a withdrawal which arose in this manner. Finally, we have lumped together all requests for academic leave (study abroad, affiliated & non-affiliated programs, one semester or two, etc.). Such distinctions are in the details of the weekly CAS minutes, if anyone needs them. With these and a few other simplifications, the CAS took the following actions between 9/11/02 and 7/31/03:

Academic Leave requests (study abroad, etc.): 4 denied, 274 granted (including one after an appeal),
Personal Leave requests: 32 granted, 1 denied, 10 extensions of existing PL's granted,
Medical Leave requests: 32 granted, 0 denied, 15 extensions of existing ML's granted,

Late Drops and/or Withdrawals entailed by the above leaves: 113.

Other Course Drop requests: 44 approved, 4 denied,
Other Withdrawal requests: 39 granted, 10 granted as WF, 6 denied,
Late Course Add requests: 72 granted, 4 denied,
Substitution of Courses to Satisfy a Requirement requests: 5 approved, 1 denied,
Deadline Change requests: 6 approved, 1 denied,
Overload requests: 3 denied, 3 approved (including 1 after an appeal).

Change of Grade requests: 1 approved (WF to W),
Change from/to a Letter Grade to S/U: 8 denied, 2 approved (including 1 after an appeal),
Other Changes: 1 request to change from audit to credit (approved),
Change a section of a course: 1 approved.

5 students were put on Personal Leave Waivers
5 students were put on Medical Leave Waivers
26 students were put on (campus) Waivers

1 change to the stipulations of a Waiver was approved

Provisional Admission for fall '02: 7 (changed to normal status after 1 semester)
Readmission requests: 12 granted (including 1 after an appeal), 0 denied
Completion plans (for August graduation) were approved for 28 BA and 16 BS candidates.
Disqualifications (DQ): 14 (initially 20, 6 were changed (to various waivers) on appeal.)

In addition, the CAS had a number of discussions about policy issues, including:

1. Study Abroad eligibility
2. Medical Leave policies
3. Senior Residency Requirement
4. Distance Learning
5. Athletic eligibility while on waiver and/or academic probation

In some cases, such as items 1 - 3, these discussions were part of the ongoing effort by CAS to continually monitor its working practices and the effects of those practices. In item 4, the CAS merely discussed the issue - no policies were adopted. In item 5, the result after several discussions with members of the Athletic Council, the Athletic Director, and the Dean of the Faculty, was a consensus on the Skidmore policy regarding eligibility.
