Committee on Admissions and Student Aid (CASA)
Annual Report 2001 - 2002
The Committee on Admissions and Student Aid met six times during the
2001-2 academic year. The committee received reports on admissions and
student aid from Mary Lou Bates and Bob Shorb. In addition the committee
was involved in the following issues.
1. Both admissions and financial aid contributed material for the "Handbook
on Admissions and Student Aid." This material is very helpful to
new members of the CASA and the community.
2. The Financial Aid sub-group of the Strategic Plan, including CASA,
Mary Lou Bates, Sandy Baum, Bob Shorb, Karl Broekhuizen worked on a detailed
plan for expanding financial aid to support more competitive need-based
assistance. This was included in the Strategic Plan plan presented to
and approved by the Board of Trustees in May.
3. Bob Massa, VP for Enrollment, Student Life and College Relations at
Dickinson College was retained to evaluate our current practices in needs
analysis and financial aid packaging to determine if we are most strategically
allocating our financial aid resources in support of our enrollment goals.
The committee received his report and recommendations in February.
4. The Strategic Plan Diversity sub-group including CASA, Mary Lou Bates,
Jack Ling, Paty Rubio, Grace Burton, Felicia Gomez and Jim Chansky addressed
increasing enrollment of students of color, international students, and
students from economic backgrounds that make affording college difficult.
5. The committee voted in favor of offering some need based financial
aid to 1 - 2 strong international students for Fall 2002 enrollment as
long as there was no impact on currently enrolled students or other diversity
in the incoming class.
6. John Young represented admissions on the Athletic Review Committee.
Recommendations are included in the Athletic Review Document available
in the Dean of Faculty office.
7. Four market research finalists made presentations on campus. Mark Edwards
was chosen to help assess how Skidmore is perceived. This information
will help to guide the admissions process in the future.
