Curriculum Committee met a total of 21 times during the academic year
2001-2002. Below is a brief summary of the committee's actions.
· 41 new courses in various disciplines, ranging in credit hours
from 1 to 4 were approved. Of these , 5 courses
were approved as LS 2 courses.
· 82 revisions to existing courses were approved. These include
changes in catalogue description , titles, pre-requisites, and semester
hours.
· 12 courses were approved as fulfilling Cultural Diversity designation.
Some of these were new courses and some were already existing courses.
· 5 courses from various disciplines were deleted from the catalogue.
· Environmental Studies (ES) major proposal was reviewed and brought
to the floor of the faculty . The major was approved by the faculty unanimously.
· A minor program in Latin American Studies was approved.
· The reconfiguration proposal from the Theater Department was
approved. This approval included addition of new courses, revisions to
existing courses and deletion of some courses.
· One of the items on our agenda was the assessment of the reconfigured
programs. Some members of CC met with Ann Ferren, the assessment specialist
who visited the campus in March,2002.At the suggestion of Ann Ferren,
, it was decided that it may be too early for a complete assessment of
the reconfiguration right now. But CC will request the department Chairs
for an informal evaluation of the effectiveness of the new 4 credit courses
with respect to such aspects as: the effectiveness of the use of flexible
fourth hour, the impact on student learning and faculty teaching processes,
the impact on the preparation of students for upper level courses in the
major, the impact on enrollments on other three credit courses in the
major etc.
· Three guests participated in the CC meetings this semester. Lary
Opitz from the Theater department was helpful in answering some issues
raised by CC members with regard to the Theater reconfiguration proposal,
especially the variable credit request for TH 250. Sue Layden outlined
possible methods to assess reconfiguration and offered her help to CC
in the assessment process. Cory Wilson of OIP
Program discussed the need for a regular procedure for approval of "study
abroad"courses. It was decided that the respective departments are
the ones most qualified to review these courses in order to assess their
equivalence to Skidmore courses and CC will eventually "sign off"
on these approvals.
