Chuck Joseph, Dean of the Faculty (Associate Dean, Fall term)
Sue Bender, Associate Dean (Spring term)
The committee met sixteen times during the academic year. In addition
to its routine business, the committee was charged by the Dean of the
Faculty with two exceptional tasks. During the late fall and early spring,
we discussed and drafted recommendations for the faculty development component
of the Strategic Plan. Several of our recommendations, including increased
funding for full-year sabbaticals and greater flexibility in assessing
faculty workload, appeared in the final document. At the end of spring
term, after discussion and debate we outlined goals and prepared eligibility
and requirement guidelines for the new faculty summer research grants
authorized by President Studley. Other business included modifying slightly
the review materials for the Ciancio Teaching Award, and at the request
of Associate Dean Bender, the committee discussed a potenital collaboration
with Union College designed to foster faculty leadership.
Alice Dean will be Chair of the Faculty Development Committee for academic
year 2002-2003.
I am very grateful to members of the committee for the integrity and
intelligence they brought to our discussions. I also extend much warm
appreciation and many thanks to Chris McGill who attended all of our meetings
and contributed greatly to the efficiency and work of the committee.
