Notes on Lecture

A) Readings (required)

1) Texts- Bloom, F. Brain, Mind & Behavior. 3rd Edition. (at bookstore) (Used copies not ok because of potential problems w/ CD).
- with 2006 CD update

Gazzaniga, M. The Ethical Brain. (at bookstore) (Used copies ok)

2) Articles (TBA) by course web site links, handout (HO) &/ or electronic mail .

B) Electronic mail

The course mail list bi110-list is sometimes used to post notices, answer questions about the material and distribute literature. Check your mail frequently to keep current.
Be certain to arrange to forward your mail if you use a non-Skidmore email account (e.g. hotmail.com, msn.com, gmail, etc.). To arrange for forwarding go to http://owa.skidmore.edu

C) Web site - This is it! The web site is the OFFICIAL current version of the course outline & lab outline. It is updated (i.e. changed) almost daily. The address to bookmark is

http://www.skidmore.edu/academics/biology/courses/ROY2/BioOfMindSp09/

Note well: While lecture/exam topics & dates are fixed as listed in the outline, any material below the red update warning is from the last edition of the course & is subject to change and posted only for your convenience.

D) Lab policies are listed separately on the lab outline.

E) Attendance in lecture is required and is usually taken daily ('required' formally means that one unexcused absence can result in failure). The only valid excuse is a signed medical note.

I realize that this may sound unduly harsh. If you have to be absent simply submit an explanatory note (hand-written, signed) for the absence and it will be attached to that day's attendance sheet. In practice, as long as you don't begin to pile up notes, you will be fine.

F) Grades are determined by the 3 exams (75%, see lecture outline for dates) and the lab average (25%) [with attendance & participation weighed as additional factors].

Grading is standard. e.g. 70.0-71.9 = C- / 72.0-77.9 = C / 78.0-79.9 = C+ / 80.0-81.9 = B- etc.

G) Exam coverage includes

• lecture material
• the text reading material with special stress on the posted chapter questions from Bloom.
• CD / Video / web material
Issues in Neuroscience - all of the readings & materials covered in your section.

H) The purpose of lecture is not to repeat the reading but to complement it. To best take advantage of the lectures I would read ahead [-; of the lecture (reading assignments are listed on the lecture outline).
