Skidmore
College has two modern electron microscopy laboratories for research and
teaching.
- The Gesell-Castle
Electron Microscopy Laboratory was established in 1997. This
modern laboratory contains the department's new transmission electron
microscope (TEM), a JEOL 1010 TEM.
- The Robert
Mahoney Electron Microscopy Laboratory is a 1200 sq. ft.,
5-room complex containing a Zeiss EM 109t TEM and JEOL TS50 scanning
electron microscope (SEM). This lab complex is the focal point for electron
microscopy preparation and includes two Reichert ultracut ultramicratomes,
a complete negative and print darkroom, sputter coater and critical
point dryers for SEM preparation, knife makers, a BalTec JFD 030 Jet
Freezer and facilities for both conventional and cryo-based fixation
of biological specimens (incl. fume hoods, ovens,...).
Over the years, Skidmore students have been involved in numerous
electron microscopy projects that have resulted in presentations at regional
and national meetings as well as co-authorship on research publications.
Students wishing to learn electron microscopy can take BI 311 (Biological
Electron Microscopy). |
