RESEARCH INTERNS: Sponsors annual summer research participation
programs for high school and college students. College juniors may
apply. Conduct a research project in molecular-cellular biology,
immunology, biophysics, biochemistry, pharmacology or cell physiology.
Attend classes and seminars taught by a faculty of internationally
known scientists. Present your research findings at a science conference.
Receive advising for careers in science. Internships are from June
to August.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have completed their junior year by the onset
of the internship and have career goals focused on attaining a Ph.D.
in research/teaching. Minority students are encouraged to apply.
Last year, 19 out of 180 applicants were selected. Must be a U.S.
citizen or permanent resident.
Compensation:
$2,500 stipend and housing, meals, and some travel expenses are
provided.

- Increase public awareness about known risks to healthy births,
and the importance of prenatal care. COMMUNITY SERVICE - Take active
role in implementing programs improving chances for healthier babies
and counsel young adults on dangers of teen pregnancy. SPEAKERS
BUREAU - Meet with civic associations and business groups giving
presentations about health problems facing infants and children
and publicizing the March of Dimes campaigns. PUBLIC AFFAIRS/ADVOCACY
- Support legislation to improve services to prevent low birth weight,
birth defects and infant death. COMMUNICATIONS - Raise public awareness
of infant/child health problems and solutions by working with community.
HEALTH EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS - Market the health education
programs to appropriate organizations and tap into existing health
programs offered by hospitals, schools, YWCAs, etc. COORDINATION
- Help organize, promote and staff health fairs, schedule speaking

and other general office duties.

Description:
Are you concerned about the unchecked spread of genetically engineered
food? Are you interested in learning the ropes of grassroots organizing?
Clean Water Action is offering a Fall internship with the SAFE FOODS
Campaign. The SAFE FOODS Campaign is currently targeting Shaw's
and Star Market to remove genetically engineered ingredients from
their product lines. The internship will include a variety of tasks
and responsibilities. You have the option at the start to select
one project you would like to focus on for the duration of the internship.
Project options include: Working with the Legislative sub-committee
of the Safe Foods Campaign; Helping newly formed Safe Foods Campaign
groups develop action plans; Assisting with the launch of the Campaign
to Stop Genetically Engineered Fish.
In addition the these long-term projects, everyday duties will include:
Maintenance of the Campaign's database; Making reminder calls to
activists; Writing news summaries for weekly e-mail update; general
office duties.
Qualifications:
Excellent writing and research skills; good phone communication
skills; a basic understanding of the genetically engineered foods
issue is preferred; ability to work independently; knowledge of
Word, Excel necessary and Pagemaker or Quark a bonus.

Description:
The BBSR is a marine and atmospheric research facility covering
all facets from coral reef ecology to studies of global climate
change. Participants in the Volunteer Internship Program assist
with on-going scientific research. We accept students as volunteer
interns throughout the year, depending on how many student assistants
are required by our scientists (usually 10-20 per year). The program
is extremely competitive, with between 150 and 300 applicants each
year. Ideally, student interns volunteer at BBSR for a minimum of
3 months. This may be extended to 6 months with the permission of
a supervisor.
Qualifications:
upper division undergraduate standing (junior or senior) or recent
graduate.
Compensation:
Volunteer Interns are provided with room and board. No stipend
is provided. Program participants must bear the cost of travel to
and from Bermuda. All research-related costs are covered.
