Career Services offers
Maybe
youve already gotten your free copy of our Resume
and Cover Letter Guide - if not, stop by or contact the
office or download a PDF
version! Either way, below youll find some
online options to supplement the workbook. Guide covers getting
started, formatting options, resume styles, and cover letter
development, and includes some samples.
More
and more organizations are storing resume information in databases
for easier retrieval, utilizing online application systems
at their web sites or, to a lesser degree, culling candidates
from resume databanks. For an extensive treatment on how to
Prepare Your
Resume for Emailing or Posting on the Internet, visit
the Riley Guide.
Speaking
of electronic resumes, SENIORS, once you've
registered
with Career Services, you should upload your resume(s) into
the Skidmore resume databank (login and click on "Documents").
Once you've uploaded your resume (a very simple process),
you'll be able to apply for monthly job listings quickly and
easily.
Tip: if you load your resume anywhere - keep
track of the site's URL so you can update or delete your info
when you want to!
Margaret
Riley, author of the well-known online Riley
Guide has an extensive Online
Resume Databases page.
If
youd like to read a totally different take on resumes,
real or virtual, see what career development guru, Richard
Bolles, has to say at his site JobHuntersBible.com.
Perhaps
you've heard about a new option for presenting your credentials:
portfolios. It's certainly not standard in most fields although
it's popular for artists and educators as a means to showcase
samples of their work and examples of their processes. Visit
our Online
Portfolio Center and learn how to create, scan, design
and submit a web version your portfolio to search engines.
Another option is author, educator, and consultant Martin
Kimeldorf's website,
and a site that allows artists to maintain their own limited
website.
Ok,
that's resumes; now let's talk about cover letters - those
individualized letters that interpret your resume for the
reader. In a nutshell, your letters (like all those academic
papers) will have introductions, main bodies, and conclusions.
The best letters (again, just like those papers) will follow
thoughtful outlines. Take a look at the Career Services Resume
and Cover Letter Writing Guide (available for free from Career
Services) for more details. A website that addresses the how-tos
of cover letter writing is CareerLab's 200
Letters For Job Hunters.
