04.03.08 - Beau Sia
Thursday, April 3rd at 7PM in Davis auditorium
**please note the time change - 7PM is the correct time**
Co-sponsored by the Speakers Bureau, Asian Studies Department, and English Department.
Beau-Sia is a Chinese Filipino-American slam poet. Raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Sia discovered spoken word poetry on MTV as a teenager. When not participating in his high school's swim team, he spent time at Oklahoma City's only open mike night.
From there, Sia went to New York University, where he attended the Tisch School of the Arts dramatic writing program. He has said that moving to New York made him conscious of his identity as an Asian American, something that he denied often in Oklahoma City. His cultural identity became a common theme in his poems.
Sia's style is humorous and satirical. His word choice is often deceptively simple. He has appeared in both HBO's Def Poetry and Broadway's Def Poetry Jam and his work has been included in several poetry anthologies."

When award-winning filmmaker Grace Lee was growing up in Missouri, she was the only Grace Lee she knew. In NY and California, however, everyone she meets seems to know "another Grace Lee." But why did they assume that all Grace Lees are reserved, dutiful, piano-playing bookworms?
Pursuing the moving target of Asian-American female identity, the filmmaker plunges into a clever, highly unscientific investigation into all those Grace Lees who break the mold. With wit and charm, THE GRACE LEE PROJECT puts a hilarious spin on the eternal question "What's in a name?"
