Mission Statement
Students for a Free Tibet, Inc. (SFT) works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for independence and cultural survival. We are a chapter-based network of young people and activists around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, we campaign for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom. Our role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice.

"Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) was formed in August 1994 to speak out on behalf of the Tibetan people. We recognize the historical and legal status of Tibet as an independent country and support the Tibetan people's right to determine their own future. We work to educate campuses and communities about the situation in Tibet, and to turn this awareness into positive action to help the Tibetan people in their struggle for self-determination.

Our campaigns focus on political, economic, environmental, interfaith, and social issues that affect the people of Tibet. We also work with many other Tibet Support Groups and human rights organizations. Underlying all of our activities is a commitment to non-violence, a recognition of the need for universal responsibility in an interdependent world, and a firm belief that young people can and must take leadership in changing our world."
     -SFT Organizer's Guide 1999-2000

The chapters of SFT serve to achieve the goals of the organization at local levels - campuses and communities. Besides spreading awareness of Tibetan history, culture, and religion, SFT works on action campaigns to bring about direct change in international affairs. The organization provides news about the current situation and ways that individuals and chapters can help. For example, chapters are provided with sample letters and petitions to mail to appropriate high ranking officials in the US, UN, China, and the World Bank among organizations.
