Nutritional Suggestions (April 10th, 2006)

Suggestions for healthier habits:
  • Pre-packaged foods (like Oreos, Doritos, etc) generally have more chemicals and fat and less nutritional benefits. Instead, try to choose fruits, vegetables or yogurts to snack on, or healthier pre-packaged snacks (like whole-wheat crackers or a granola bar)
  • Try to limit (or avoid) fried food. At a fast food restaurant, order a salad, yogurt parfait, or grilled chicken sandwich instead of a hamburger and French fries
  • Pay attention not only to what you are eating, but how much. One serving size can be much smaller than you think it is
  • Natural peanut butter is much healthier than regular or even reduced-fat varieties.
  • Limit butter intake and eliminate margarine from your diet.
  • Cut out unnecessary fats (egg yolks, whole milk, fried foods).
  • Reduce sugar intake by choosing skim milk or water over sugary fruit drinks, chocolate milk or sodas.
Healthy Ideas:
  • Trail Mix- combine Cheerios, raisons, nuts, dried fruit and chocolate chips.
  • Chopped veggies (cucumbers, carrots, bell peppers, etc) and ranch dip.
  • Apples and peanut butter.
  • Celery sticks with cream cheese and raisons.
  • Whole wheat crackers with cheese.
  • English muffin (preferably whole wheat) “pizzas” with tomato sauce, cheese and veggies.
  • Yogurt parfaits (with granola, fruit, yogurt).
  • Baked tortilla chips with salsa or bean dip.
Lunches:
  • Wrap roll-up sandwiches- can use all veggies, turkey or ham.
  • Pita sandwiches with tuna, lunch meats, veggies, etc.
  • Hummus sandwiches.
  • Salads with lunch meats.
  • Whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce, pesto sauce, etc.
  • Soups (not cream-based) in a thermos.
  • Peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Vegetarianism (April 10th, 2006)

In spite of how society normally recognizes the vastly different accomplishments of Socrates, Plato, William Shakespeare, and Benjamin Franklin, these famous people all share one common choice in lifestyle—they all happen to have been vegetarians. The Irony of Atkins (April 10th, 2006)

Two months ago my father and I argued about the Atkins diet. We were absorbed in a rerun of American Idol when, during a commercial break, I mentioned to him that the one hundred percent whole wheat English muffin I had been chomping on earlier was a healthy snack, something he might want to incorporate into his diet. “Nah,” he said, “I don’t want all the carbs.” And here is where a seemingly benign conversation turned malignant...
