Blue notes

Every summer Skidmore is home to the coolest music-makers. Take Coolman himself—that’s Grammy-winning jazz bassist Todd Coolman. Then there’s legendary trombone player Curtis Fuller. And the LaBarberas—smokin’ saxophonist Pat and composer-arranger John. Add trumpeters Vince DiMartino and Clyde Kerr Jr., pianist-composer Frank Mantooth, drummer Ed Shaughnessy, and jazz historian Hal Miller, and you’ve got a very cool crowd serving as the teaching faculty for this year’s Jazz Institute at Skidmore.

And their students, from teenagers on up, are pretty impressive themselves. They come from cities and small towns, from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, even from overseas. A few win scholarships to the institute from Blue Note, the big recording label, and so far three have won McCormack Scholarships, established by friends and colleagues of Jazz Institute founder Donald McCormack (Skidmore’s dean of special programs) and wife Judy (director of Skidmore’s counseling center). Just for instance, the 1999 McCormack Scholar, trumpet phenom Brandon Lee, recently performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis.

But for sheer cool—that magical blend of fame, virtuosity, humility, passion, and great road stories —perhaps no one can fill the shoes of legendary Jazz Institute icon (and jazz world icon) Milt “the Judge” Hinton. A regular on the Jazz Institute faculty for ten years, Hinton died last December at the age of 90. One of the great pioneers of the jazz bass, he was widely admired for his “high standards, superb intonation and impeccable timing,” according to the New York Times. Hinton worked with Cab Calloway for years, and also with Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and many other top musicians. A devoted teacher at several colleges and workshops, he established his own scholarship for young bassists.

And so this July, Jazz Institute guest artist Christian McBride, a renowned bass player and protégé of Milt Hinton, dedicates his public concert to Hinton’s memory. The concert pays tribute to Hinton’s legacy as an artist and teacher whose gracious generosity, wisdom, humor, and warmth have inspired the hearts and minds (and lips and fingers) of hundreds of up-and-coming musicians.
