Tin can alley
On the first-ever Earth Day, in April 1970, Skidmore students (including Vicary Clark Thomas ’70, with can in hand) picked up litter on an early morning nature walk in the North Woods, part of the not-yet-finished new campus. Coinciding with Founder’s Day and its traditional suspension of regular classes, the campus observance of Earth Day was billed as an “ecology teach-in,” featuring lectures, movies, and exhibits on pollution and conservation; cleanup of a playground near the old downtown campus; and a “plant-in” to install shrubs on a slope near Van Lennep Stables.
