Cynthia Taft Lathrop

Lynn Allen Chamberlin has been living in Williamsburg, VA, for seven years, enjoying “a reasonably active life at a slower pace.” Lynn had a slight stroke last summer while on vacation in Massachusetts and spent most of the time in the hospital. She walks with a cane now and follows a regular exercise regimen. She enjoys playing the piano, being involved in volunteer activities, and attending concerts, theater productions, and classes at the College of William and Mary.

Doris Callaghan Gillingham of Manchester, NH, still has back problems, which slow her down considerably. She reports that Mar Henze Davis moved to Marland Place in Andover, MA.

Marion Jones Averitt moved from Arizona to be near her son in Vancouver, WA; she’s finding it a little cooler there.

Dorothy Lodgen Halpern lives at Lasell Village, a retirement community in Newton, MA, and takes classes at Lasell College. She herself offers a course in “Excerpts from Porgy and Bess,” for people who like to sing. Two of her students are in their nineties, one is wheelchair bound, another has macular degeneration, and another is deaf in one ear. “We’re a jolly bunch!” she quips.

Judy Helmick Settle plays golf and bridge, tutors English as a second language, sews, and is active in her church. She winters in Borrego Springs, CA, and summers in Colorado. Last winter she slipped on icy grass and broke her leg, which put her in a wheelchair. But she is now fully recovered and back on the golf course. Judy made a sunbonnet quilt to raise money for a local medical clinic.

Beverly Blickman Yunich continues to create artwork and divides her time between Scarsdale and Saratoga. She frequently visits her two sons and also sister Gloria Blickman Horwitz, who lives in Rochester, NY.

Jean Brickwood Slocum lives with her daughter and son-in-law, who added a wing to their house in Boothbay, ME, to accommodate her. She notes, “It’s lovely, right on the water.”

In Anchorage, AK, Floranna Chayes Lathrop and husband finally got snow after a warm summer in the 70s and 80s. Flannel is out every day, playing bridge or going to the gym; she says she stays busy because she’s “afraid to stop.”

Anne Hillhouse Jennings of Merritt Island, FL, was evacuated from her home during two of last summer’s hurricanes. She and her cats were taken to well-supplied, pet-friendly hotels, she notes.

Helen Kindergan Higgins and husband Milton live in Downey, CA, but spend June to October in Maine. They drive to and from the two locations every year, taking different routes and exploring the country. Last year they stopped in Washington, DC, to see the WWII Memorial and thought it was spectacular. They also visited the battleship Texas, used in the Normandy invasion and now a military museum anchored in Houston harbor. Five of the couple’s seven grandchildren have graduated from college.
