Last March Ann Trainer Williams and daughter Libby made a trip to Asia. After spending three days in Bankok, they boarded the Sapphire Princess for stops in Singapore; Hong Kong; Shanghai; Nagasaki; Pusan, South Korea; and Beijing—where they flew to Xian to see the Terracotta Warriors and horses of the Emperor Qin Shihuang. The Great Wall was a favorite. There was excitement when three of Libby’s Japanese friends flew from Tokyo to Nagasaki and greeted them with a welcome banner. Ann is thrilled that Libby’s daughter, Kelly Bradshaw, has been named the first female drum major at the University of Tennessee. Ann watches her perform when Tennessee’s football games are televised.
When Ann attended her first Skidmore club meeting of the year, she saw another ’53 alumna on the sign-in sheet. The name Susan Moyer from Sun City didn’t ring a bell; but after seeing her, Ann realized it was Susan Wickware, who lived in Wilmarth freshman year with Ann and me. Susan had become a widow recently and moved to Sun City. The two had a grand time reminiscing about our dorm and housemom, “Miss Squiz.”
Pat Gove Williams and husband Craig toured the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico last spring. They were introduced to primitive tribes who eke out a living tending sheep and creating handmade baskets. Living in caves with little furniture, few roads, and maybe a bicycle for transportation, they enjoy an environment of great beauty, Pat says. In September the Williamses flew to London, before heading to Amsterdam to connect with a boat tour down the Rhine and Danube. In Heidelberg they met up with Brigit, a foreign student they’d hosted years ago, and her husband. At home Pat was honored by the Connecticut Association of Elementary Principals for her work at the Marlborough, CT, Elementary School library. Craig was feted by the Connecticut Youth Services Association for chairing the Marlborough part of a telethon the past four years.
Barbara Fee Dickason and husband John were up from Florida visiting Craig and Pat Williams when Katrina struck. They stayed a week longer with the Williamses, avoiding the power outages experienced in their Coral Gables home.
Four of Natalie Jones Neri and husband Gene’s five kids are living in Colorado and Nevada; the Neris expect to travel west in 2006. Their oldest granddaughter attends the College of Charleston. The Neris host Charleston’s sailing team when it competes with Yale and the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. Gene especially enjoys entertaining five blonds and their coach.
Louise Berke Wulff’s husband, Kurt, is busy with investment-related energy issues. Petey met Skidmore President Phil Glotzbach at a meeting in Boston.
Before returning to their Florida home from New England, Sylvia Shaw Brandhorst met Elinor Reponen Cronin for lunch. During the summer Syl and husband Dick caught up with Sally Sanderson Cutler, who was renting a cottage across from them on Squam Lake. In September, Syl enjoyed a round of golf with Betsy Singer Gluck; Syl reports lots of laughs and fun, but not much improvement in her golf.
