Debbie Baum Chapin-Horowitz earned a master’s in public affairs at the University of Cincinnati and has since worked in public service, first in Cincinnati and then NYC. In 1984 she graduated from NYU with a law degree, first going into private practice and later working at Viacom. She and husband Ed were married in 2000 and formed a venture fund that Debbie still maintains (EdsLink LLC). Son Josh is a freshman at Duke. Debbie would love to hear from Skidmore friends.
Denise Simon Vance and husband Ron retired in June 2004. After selling their San Diego area home, they traveled in a large motor coach to Mexico, Alaska, and Yellowstone. They spent the winter in Park City, UT, where Denise is a full-time ski instructor at Deer Valley. Classmates can contact her at RV4DV@aol.com.
Rebecca Irwin Johnson is a golf instructor and LPGA class A member. She is hoping to regain contact with Karin Wellings Marcus, whom she misses very much. Rebecca welcomes e-mail at sisterbecca@comcast.net.
June Sobel Raudonis will publish more children’s books in 2006. Shiver Me Letters debuts in May, and The Good Night Train is due to hit bookstores in September. For more info, visit www.junesobel.com.
Sarah Ruth Lundy lives in Sharon, MA, where she is “still single and getting grown up.” She’s teaching a course in museum studies at Massasoit Community College.
Ellie Hodenpyl Morgan and husband Bob spent the holidays in St. Croix. They had a successful year renting their St. Lucia villa through the Internet sites Holiday-Rentals and Cyberrentals. Bob visits the villa as often as he can to keep it in shape, while Ellie handles the computer end. She does go twice a year or when she “really needs a hard, physical, working vacation.” Their home on St. Croix is a little bit of paradise but also offers the opportunity to tend to gardens, waterfront, and Bob’s fleet of decaying Mercedes cars. Their German shepherd puppy, Happy, has taken to breaking into and out of the house with his Cruzan playmate, Poncho.
Mary Parker Ballou lives in Basalt, CO, in the Rocky Mountains, where the winter temperatures sometimes hit minus-20 degrees at night. Son Matt is living the life of a pro snowboarder in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Mary loves teaching preschool and continues to watercolor and do ceramics. She recently participated in a Paul Soldner workshop. The 85-year-old “amazing” artist, who she met at Skidmore in 1970, is a part-time Aspen resident.
Sibyl Waterman Haley’s daughter was married in September at a resort in Southport, ME, right across from a tiny red cottage owned by Margaret Hamilton, the actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. Sybil’s daughter considered this “a delightful quirk that enhanced the ceremony.”
Honorary and emeritus status was conferred on Shelley Widoff for her outstanding service to the American Association for Paralegal Education. She’s been involved with paralegal education for more than 20 years and lives in Brookline, MA.
Margaret Gentile McKeown, a research scientist at the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center, reports that the book she co-wrote with two other authors has sold 185,000 copies. Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction was published in 2002.
