class notes 1920s | 1930s | 1940s | 1950s | 1960s | 1970s | 1980s | 1990s | 2000s People & projects | UWW | In Memoriam 1990s 1990 | 1991 | 1992 | 1993 | 1994 | 1995 | 1996 | 1997 | 1998 | 1999 1996 Ann Marie Przywara The January 1 issue of the New York Times cited the dozens of people slipping along the icy sidewalk from the subway to a storefront performance space to see a show called What’s That on My Head?, by “an obscure collective called the National Theater of the United States of America, which has stealthily become one of the most exciting and eccentric young theater companies in town.” Collaborating since 1997 and officially formed in 2000, the National Theater (so named to make it sound as official as possible) includes Yehuda Duenya, Jonathan Jacobs ’95, Mark Doskow ’97, Jesse Hawley ’97, and Ryan Bronz ’96. All members act, write, design, and make decisions together. And, as the Times critic notes, “they accomplish their ludicrously grand shows with no director.”
