Kristen Lommele is in Arequipa, Peru, where she teaches elementary school in an impoverished area, through the YMCA. She says, “The children here are amazing, and while they have a difficult living situation (no running water, little clothing, and no health care), they are willing to learn and maintain an upbeat attitude.”

Jocelyn Arem completed a full year of primary research on the history of Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs (see winter Scope) and was reelected to the café’s board. She is conducting research at the Library of Congress in preparation for a book on the café’s impact on American cultural history. She’s also applying to graduate schools for programs in performance studies. Jocelyn enjoyed a mini-reunion in Washington, DC, with Melissa Warren ’02 and spent New Year’s Eve hiking in Colorado with Jerica McClure-Pries. Jocelyn’s first album of original songs, featuring guitarist Mark Klein ’05, will be released this year and can be sampled at www.jocelynarem.com.

Aaron Stone is music supervisor at the Lodge, a recording and sound mixing studio in Manhattan founded by Emily Lazaar ’93. In addition to doing music for TV commercials, he’s conducting a study on sound-branding recognition—how a jingle, button, or certain sonic effect helps identify a brand. Classmates interested in the research can take an online survey (“a fun and entertaining 15 minutes!”) at http://www.adsneaker.com. Each page will load a sound, and participants will be asked a series of questions about brand recognition. In his spare time, Aaron performs in his band Willie May’s Haze (www.myspace.com/williemayshaze for tracks of original music). Aaron welcomes e-mail at aaronastone@gmail.com.

In NYC Eric Berninghausen is a scenic carpenter for Manhattan Theatre Club. He spent the previous year in South India, working at Kodaikanal International School, where he taught woodworking and art.

Also in NYC Ariel Grossman performs with ACFdance, a modern dance company, and teaches nursery school and kindergarten at a Hebrew School.
