The Oregon Arts Commission gave poet Patricia Staton Thomas and 10 other Oregon artists awards of $3,000 for outstanding and innovative work in the literary and performing arts. Artists may use their grants to complete work in progress or embark on a new body of work. Lauded as
“a high-octane poet,” Patricia has been published in The Iowa Review, Prairie Schooner, and Pleiades, among others. Her collection Walking After Dinner was awarded a 2005 Pushcart Prize, and she received an Artist Trust Fellowship in 1995. The Astoria resident comments, “My work is concerned with getting out the words. I am curious about everyday language.”

Ellen Sherman spent the holidays in Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale, FL, visiting friends and watching son Andrew, 11, play tennis. The NYC producer for NBC Dateline spends time with Micheale Cohen Drayer, with whom she shares a book club, and with Ellen Rosen Wolfson and Ellen Wald.

In 2004 Jane Fowler Grau relocated to Salt Lake City, UT, to serve as nanny to her granddaughters, a job she considers “a priceless opportunity.” Jane finds Salt Lake to be a great city for kids, so her job is “easy and fun.” Now that the kids are in preschool, Jane has a grown-up job interviewing people as a features reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune. In January she became copyeditor. She encourages classmates interested in skiing or hiking to contact her at janegrau@juno.com.

Andrea Fenton Campbell enjoys teaching at SUNY-Delhi. Husband Bill is retired and has taken on a second career as elections commissioner in Delaware County. A member of the college council at SUNY-Oneonta, Andrea is active in local politics and civic groups and serves as a liturgical deacon. In August Andrea and Bill sold their home of 25 years and bought another one she has long admired. In the fall they became grandparents, thanks to middle child Andrew and his wife. Their youngest, Ben, was married in July, and daughter Johanna teaches at Hartwick College.

Rin Marshall Babson enjoys spending time with daughter Kathy, son-in-law David, and granddaughter Libby. Rin’s son John and wife Abigail live in the South End of Boston. John has been working for Fidelity, recently completing a project in Paris that required him to commute home on weekends.

Marsha Petersen Kenny wrote in to share the very sad news that Joan MacLennan Kenny passed away in November after being diagnosed with cancer 16 months prior. Marsha attended Joan’s memorial service, which celebrated her love of family and remarkable green thumb and culinary skills. She served SUNY-Stony Brook and its students with dedication and commitment, most recently as assistant dean in the college of engineering and applied sciences for the past 20 years. A scholarship is being established in her name by the university, to show its “love and appreciation for Joan’s contributions.”

Cathy Fuller Nicholson and Tom went on the “trip of a lifetime” to Africa, where they experienced “the remarkable spirit of post-apartheid South Africa and then traveled to four diverse safari camps in Botswana. In the vast salt pans of the Kalahari Desert we lay on our backs under an amazing panorama of stars and felt the sacredness of being a miniscule part of such a wondrous creation,” reports Cathy. Children Betsy and Eric live north of Boston, working at NOAA and Mass. Financial Services, respectively. Katie is in her second year of medical school at George Washington University after a summer working in a pediatric hospital in Ecuador. Tom Jr. is bringing up his family in Columbus, OH. We send condolences to Cathy on the death of her stepfather.

Suzanne Phillips and her partner, Ann, moved (after 18 years) to a bigger house on a lot that backs up to Hahn Woods, a 20-acre parcel preserved by Georgia Pacific and Emory University. Suzanne
is thrilled that our West Coast classmate Nancy Cluck Johnson McIntyre’s daughter Katherine decided to enroll at Emory. Suzanne and Ann have had a wonderful time seeing Nancy and Spence on their trips to Emory to get Katherine settled and attend parents weekend.

Susan Poch Orlando is retired from her faculty position at Columbia University but does substitute teaching on a regular basis while also observing student teachers from Saint Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, NY. Named in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in American Education, she has also been elected to the International Board of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Oldest daughter Rebecca, a graduate of Cornell and Teachers College, teaches at the school where Susan began her career in 1969. Rebecca’s fiancé is a graduate of Johnson and Wales and an executive chef. Youngest daughter Dara graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and the London School of Economics and works for a branding company in NYC. Both girls share an apartment in NYC. Sue’s husband, Richard, is working in the human resources department of Yeshiva University.

After 20 years in Dallas, TX, Foxie Henn Mason and Dick moved to a new home in Durango, CO, in December; e-mail is fmason@frontier.net. They encourage friends to visit and “enjoy the pleasures of the Southwest with us.” Foxie will continue to teach one course at the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences, which means returning to Dallas a few times per semester to meet with students. Dick retired from Southern Methodist University in December but will continue his writing. During his sabbatical last year, the couple traveled to Singapore, where Dick served as a visiting professor at Nanyang University. They also visited Hanoi and Halong Bay in Vietnam, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and Bangkok, Thailand. In June the Masons presented lectures on information systems and library sciences at the University of Boros, Sweden. They took time to tour the Swedish archipelago and spent a long weekend in Finland.

Susan Chern Lomastro and husband Joe celebrated Christmas in Minneapolis, MN, with daughter Megan and husband Brian, who were married in a candlelight ceremony in St. Paul on December 29. Megan is a product manager for MGI Pharma, an oncology biotech pharmaceutical company. Son Brian is with Ortho Biotech, an oncology division of Johnson & Johnson. Last summer Sue and Joe celebrated the wedding of Joe’s eldest grandson in Rhode Island and had a great time with his children and the six other grandchildren, who range from age 1 to 26. Sue and Joe enjoy retirement in Naples, FL. Aside from golf and social activities, they continue to volunteer for FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team in North Naples and were involved in the immediate recovery effort after Hurricane Charley. Sue passed her 13th year of survival from breast cancer and is “thankful for every day.”
