A recent issue of Maine’s Portland Herald newspaper featured Peace Corps volunteer Zoe Lewis, who spent two years in the impoverished African nation of Mozambique, teaching six classes a
day and, along the way, exposing her students to the concept of gender equality. Legislation raising the minimum age for marriage from 14 to 18 and allowing women to inherit property was passed just four years ago; attitudes, especially among males, haven’t changed. “My heart was pounding,” recalled Zoe. “As they realized where I was going with my discussion on the roles of women, the boys became belligerent but the girls’ faces just started to glow. I thought, OK, I’ve done something really important here.” Now back in the US, Zoe is a field instructor for a wilderness therapy program for troubled teens.

In September Sinem Varoglu was named grand-prize winner in the world music category of the international John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Her song “Boom Sheke Nana” beat out thousands of other entries. The competition continues this spring when Sinem’s song goes head
to head with the 2007 winner; if her song is voted most popular (you can vote online at www.jlsc.com starting in April), she’ll win an EMI publishing contract and a chance at the $20,000 Maxell Song of the Year Award. Meanwhile, Sinem is recording her debut album with French producer Henri Scars-Struck.
