Dree Mayforth Wetzler and Bob find that various activities—plays, concerts, and lectures—give them a new perspective that keeps them interested in what’s going on in this crazy world. An extended trip to the Washington area to visit their daughters and on to Cape Cod visiting old friends along the way helped too. Among them were Kay Jones Thorpe in Southbury, CT, and Peggy O’Neil McNamara at her new home in Linden Ponds in Hingham, MA. The slump in the real-estate market has postponed the Wetzlers’ plan to sell their condo in Sebastian, FL.

Carolyn Eberle Caldwell reports that husband John “died peacefully of lung cancer in June. He was a great joy.” The couple was hoping to spend time at Spur Cross, an inn that daughter Carolyn had recently acquired in Cave Creek, AZ. “It’s a little bit of heaven,” Carolyn says. “He would have enjoyed it.” (You can visit www.spurcrossbnb.com for a virtual tour.) This past winter Caroline had a good visit with Lucy Crotty.

Gloria Moos Hatch loves living at Beverwyck Retirement Community in Slingerlands, NY, where there are nice people, good food, and lots of activities. She spent Thanksgiving in West Hartford, CT, with daughter Pat and her two daughters, one of whom is married and lives in Providence, RI, with Gloria’s two great-grandchildren, ages 5 and 7. This is the first year Gloria was not able to play golf due to arthritis, but she plays loads of bridge, takes bus trips to Tanglewood, Saratoga, and Lake George.

Eleanor Baldwin Walter, who died in August, spent five years with me and 10 other nursing majors, traveling from Saratoga Springs to Cambridge, NY, New Haven and Hartford, CT, and Ithaca, NY, learning our profession. Elly later shared many of the hair-raising experiences she had as an Army Corps nurse in New Guinea during WWII. She had a great capacity for analyzing problems and organizing solutions while also having fun at it. I have fond memories of our last visit together, when she parked her motor home in my yard, with two show dogs in tow, en route to a competition.
