I received a lovely Christmas card from Pat Carle Powers. She was sorry she could not make Reunion due to a family reunion the same weekend. Her houses in Maine and Longmeadow, MA, keep her busy, as does her border collie Ian. Both this year and last year she traveled to France to spend time with former housemates when she spent her junior year there. They had a great time together and hope to continue to meet while they are “still able to walk, talk, and enjoy food and wine.”
Joan Pohlman O’Rourke took her granddaughter on a cruise to Panama and Costa Rica. She had a wedding to attend in Lakeland four days after returning to Boca Raton, and stayed at my home in Orlando for the interim. We got Marion Bolton Northrup to drive over, and the three of us went to lunch and had a great time catching up.
Early morning walks on the beach each day help Betty Johnson Boothe and her husband stay in good health, for which they are thankful. Their three daughters and families are in Rutland, VT, and Lexington and Framingham, MA—all close enough for frequent visits. The Boothes’ eight grandchildren are their biggest joy. Betty invites classmates to call her when on Cape Cod.
Flora Shoemaker Taylor’s whole family celebrated her husband’s 80th birthday on a big-band cruise on the Ohio River steamboat American Queen. At Thanksgiving, the clan celebrated when the Taylor’s two sons, both of whom earned the rank of Eagle Scout, were asked to participate in an awards ceremony for their son, Rusty, as he became an Eagle Scout.
In May I flew to Pullman, WA, to see my daughter, Ann, receive a PhD in molecular botany. An expert in plant cells, she was featured in the cover story of a recent issue of the American Journal of Botany for her photography, taken through a microscope.
