Marylou Woodruff Street and husband Bud spent the holidays with their families in Concord, Harwich Port, and Barnstable, MA. They extended their annual Elderhostel in Golf in Daytona, FL, to spend time on Amelia Island. During a trip to the Caribbean last year, Marylou made a point of checking out the local tequila factory. She is looking forward to Reunion.
Marge Fee Neff and Charlie have finally retired—at least partly. Marge will work two or three days a week with daughter Debbie at their medical-claims consultancy, which they have renamed Med Advocates. Marge and Charlie spent a few weeks with friends at their beloved Edisto, SC, beach house in May and September. They later traveled to Chicago for granddaughter Dani’s graduation from a master’s program in theology before one final trip to Annapolis, MD. Marge is getting injections of the drug Lucentis for her macular degeneration. Charlie still has back and leg pain from bulging discs. Marge is looking forward to our 60th.
Nancy Hare Dunn won’t make our 60th, as her grandson is graduating that weekend.
Mary Mitchell Durland has been overwhelmed with health problems—hers as well as her son’s and granddaughter’s. Mitch’s son had his leg amputated, followed by heart surgery five months later. Fortunately, Mitch has finally gotten her high blood pressure regulated. She hopes to see us in May.
Beulah Schwartz Edwards and Arthur have returned from a trip through Europe on the QE 2.
Joan Fredericks Whetstone and Stan continue to enjoy winters in Florida. Joan still plays violin and sings in a choir. From July to September the couple lives in Park City, UT, where daughter Kirsten is a city planner. Last year they visited daughters Karin in Greeley, CO, and Sally in Golden, then rooted for grandson Connor on the soccer team at Embry Riddle Aeronautics College in Prescott, AZ. The Whetstones will be in Saratoga for our 60th.
Dottie Schaap Adler moved to Florida to escape the cold northern winters. She won’t make Reunion, as a granddaughter is graduating from Tulane and another is getting married in early June. She wishes us all well.
Helen Buch Thorpe’s daughter Susan took her to France for Helen’s 80th birthday party. Helen also spent time visiting cousins in Portland, OR. She will be coming to Reunion with Ruth Gold West; they are trying to get Joan Taylor Brandenburg and Joanne Whiting Lenci to come too.
Joan Hull and Dale celebrated his 90th birthday with family. While cruising the Pacific, they viewed statues on Easter Island, the museum in Japan honoring the kamikaze pilots, and ninth-century temples in Angkor Wat. Son Scott met them in Hong Kong. They visited the Rock of Gibralter before returning home. Joan and Dale play nine holes of golf weekly. In November they took a Mexican Riviera cruise to Puerto Vallarta and Rincon de Guayabitos, their old hometown.
Betti Detrick Williams and Don stay busy. She plays bridge and paints four or five days a week, exhibiting at 17 shows last year. The couple spent January and February in Naples, FL, and the rest of the year in the Strafford, NH, home they share with several cats and dogs. With son Donnie and his family just 15 minutes away, Betti enjoys her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Daughter Laurie is back in Maine. Betti hopes to make it to our 60th.
Leah Cunningham Wood enjoys her adult retirement community. Sadly, husband Chuck, who is barely able to swallow or talk, has moved into the medical center permanently. Leah enjoys playing bridge, poker, and bingo. She goes by trolley or taxi to see Chuck. She has lost vision in her left eye and has glaucoma and a cataract in the right. Daughter Lorraine and son Tom visited for the holidays.
For her 80th birthday Martha Dunkel Chilcott was in Hawaii, where she has a huge home, with 12 members of her family. She has finally recovered from hip and thigh problems. Martha says she has decided to be the “Dowager Queen” of her family.
For our 60th Phyl Dye Turner sent a treasure trove of photos to Adele Einhorn ’80, executive director of the Skidmore College Saratoga Classic Horse Show. Many were shots of horse shows held at Skidmore when Phyl was a student. A photo of Phyl jumping her horse, Tex, appeared in an August 2008 edition of the US Hunter/Jumper Association magazine In Stride. An accompanying article, entitled “Summer at Skidmore,” traced the history of the horse show and the College’s long tradition of riding.
Virginia White Blakemore saw that she was listed as Mrs. Virginia Blakemore in a recent class directory. She hopes that everyone recognized the name. She noted, sadly, that Jane Evans Murphy has been deceased for 50 years.
I had all my family here—except the Californians—for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I stay busy volunteering with the New Dorp High alumni, my church, and waitressing at the café for the women’s auxiliary of Richmond Town.
