A December issue of the New York Times featured an op-ed piece by Judith Flanders, who has written extensively about life in Victorian England. In the article she examines the roots of Boxing Day, when employers traditionally gave boxed gifts to their servants, and remarks that given the current worldwide economic crisis it would be wise to remember this tradition of charity. She is the author of Inside the Victorian Home: A Portrait of Domestic Life in Victorian England and A Circle of Sisters, a biography of four lower-middle–class English sisters who married relatively famous men during that period. She is managing editor of Penguin Books, UK.
