Cary Bruner Dean celebrated her 54th wedding anniversary in February with four kids, 10 grandchildren, and three great-grands. One granddaughter has been accepted to veterinary school, and a grandson wrestled at the NCASA tournament for Indiana University. Cary and husband Hank are still active in their church and community. She has been doing crafts; Hank stays busy at the computer. They left in May for Ontario and will return home to Ohio in October.

After a winter devoid of travel, Ferne Hessberg Weiner and husband Howard headed to Japan on a Stanford University–sponsored trip, followed by a trek to Antarctica with a couple they met in a Zodiac group. The Weiners visited NYC in May and then flew to Denver, CO, in June before heading off to Banff and Lake Louise in Canada. In between they attended a grandson’s high-school graduation.

Edith Lange Smith traveled to Texas this spring to see her great-grandchildren. After 10 grandsons, she is pleased that the great-grands are evenly divided: two girls and two boys.

Pete and Doris Higgons Popenoe are doing well. They met Phyllis Harder Reininger and husband Dick for lunch.

Doris and Leah Cunningham Wood meet for monthly bridge with a group of seniors, including some over 90.

Claire Schreiber Pittman’s Florida condo was devastated by Hurricanes Jeanne and Frances. She and husband Charles hit the road for seven months afterward—visiting friends in Tampa, Hilton Head, Boca Raton, and Vero Beach. Claire fell and broke her hip in January and spent several months in rehab. The Pittmans are now renting in Vero.

Ann Lilley Smith had surgery on her rotator cuff and also spent several months in therapy, but was able to join daughter Sue and family on an eastern Caribbean cruise. The cruise compensated for the 98 inches of snow that fell this winter (happily, many of Ann’s family members who ski loved it).

While visiting Vero Beach, FL, Mary Lou Woodruff Street and husband Bud bumped into a friend of my son and grandson. The couple also rented a condo in Palm Coast for a month. At one point during the harsh Cape Cod winter, Mary Lou was obliged to climb out a window to get out of her house, as snow had blocked the doors.

Betsy Bell Condron spent part of the winter in Marco Island, FL. She got together with Mary Mitchell Durland and Carolyn Cain Willen in Naples. Betsy and Joseph returned home to chilly Pennsylvania in March.

Although Phyl Dye Turner was unable to attend last year’s reunion, she did the next best thing by arranging a mini-reunion with former roommate Pat McCleod Leeming. Phyl spent 10 days at the Leemings’ Indiana home.

Kay Christie Shaw can’t imagine being fully retired and insists, “Artists are always teaching and searching.” Living in Scituate Harbor in Massachusetts affords her plenty of inspiration and fun. Kay always gives Skidmore accolades.

Pat Hickey Powell’s husband, Neil, won a seat on the city council in Orlando, FL. Pat is “coasting through the golden years” after recent back surgery.

Joyce Watkins Bates and hubby Herman love retirement in Washington State, where she is docent at the Museum of Western Art and active in garden and exercise clubs. With a thriving jewelry business, Joyce visits family when time allows.

Dottie Belden McCallum’s husband reports that Dottie has been in a nursing center since last June. She has difficulty talking but seems content and enjoys eating breakfast and dinner with her husband there.

Martha Dunkel Chilcott is delighted with her Irish terrier Terra Cotta, a rescued dog who came into her life with lots of problems. Martha embarked on her first Elderhostel to Mt. Adams, WA, viewing wildflowers and birds. A five-year survivor of breast cancer, Dunk had her own 14-member team participating in the Susan Komen 5K Walk for breast cancer in April.

Joanne Whiting Lenci traveled to Holland with a daughter who lives in Colorado.
New class president Katherine Morse Pincus and husband Mickey spent the winter in Fort Pierce, FL, and headed north to Minneapolis, MN, for the summer. There Tinka enjoyed the company of her “one and only super 15-year-old granddaughter.” Tinka has gone whale-watching in Baja, CA, and cruising in the Chilean fjords.

We extend condolences to Adelaide Hodgman Marx, who lost husband Chris last year. Addie, who spent last summer in the Berkshires at the lakeside residence of her daughter and family, is restoring her historic house.

I had been busy as president of the ECW, a commitment that is now over, but have taken on the presidency of the S.I. Historical Society Auxiliary. I also continue to serve as treasurer of my high school’s alumni association (we are planning our 60th reunion for ’45ers). I have also been elected to the vestry of my church for three years. In my spare time, I try to keep up the beach and country houses.
