Retired naval officer Barbara Bull Riester, who helped coordinate Red Cross relief efforts in NYC after September 11, accepted a one-year position with the American Red Cross as the finance and administrative delegate to the Tsunami Long Term Recovery organization, based in Jakarta, Indonesia. After a two-week orientation in Washington, DC, in April, she flew to Jakarta to assume her post.
After two stints in Japan totaling nearly a decade, Susan Canfield Barber and husband John are living in Reno, NV. John retired after a career with General Electric and AOL, and Susan left her nursing career when they moved overseas. Their two sons graduated from the American School in Tokyo and now attend Colgate and Washington University in St. Louis. Susan’s mother, who was a secretary at Skidmore, passed away last summer.
Connie Kniffin is marking her 20th year as a kindergarten teacher in Brunswick, ME. On January 1, 2003, she married John Lemon, a psychotherapist (and “recovering lawyer”) with a practice in Portland. The benefits of her new married status include two “fantastic” stepchildren and a 7-month-old granddaughter. Connie’s daughter, Catharine, is a junior at Barnard; son Spencer is on a hiatus from house painting in the midcoast Maine area. Connie’s in regular contact with Sue Hufnagel, who lives 45 minutes away in Owls Head. She’s looking forward to Sybil Waterman Haley returning to Maine from the Washington, DC, area.
Ann Mallory Stearns creates stunning ceramic vessels and sculptures at her Connecticut studio (see www.annmallory.com). Ann’s work has been shown in Seattle, Los Angeles, Sun Valley, Chicago, Santa Fe, NYC, and Koblenz, Germany. She and husband Bryan, newlyweds, live in Woodbury, CT.
Connie Paske, who teaches English as a second language in Elizabeth, NJ, public schools, spent the last two summers in Krakow, Poland. She studied at the Jagellonion University and taught ESL in a UNESCO language camp there. Her son graduated from Dickinson College in May.
Vermonter M.B. McDonald joined Cathy Nimick and Lucie Sides Bourdon in Hanover, NH, where they “recalled good times at Dartmouth with a slow drive through the fraternity neighborhoods.”
In March Sandy Lipson and M.B. enjoyed a spa break at Stowe and concluded that having an off-year reunion at a spa is a good idea!
Speaking of reunions, Peg Getman hopes to persuade Seattle, WA, resident Judy Pigott to attend next year’s reunion. It’s not too early to begin making plans; Reunion is June 1–4, 2006.
