Defining "patriot" ...

The men and women in our armed services are the obvious examples of a “patriot.” But I think there is a patriot in all of us. People who get involved socially, politically, environmentally are all striving for the same thing—what they perceive as a better world.
DAWN GREENLAW, assistant director, Skidmore Shop

Patriots put their country before their personal and financial comfort. Alexander Hamilton was a consummate patriot. If one’s loyalty is only to money, one can be bought off; if it’s to religion, that doesn’t work well in a secular state. That’s why true patriotism—loyalty to country—is important.
JON BURKAN ’93,
assistant VP, Merrill Lynch

After 9/11 there were images of the American flag everywhere—a gesture equivalent to grabbing the hand of the person next to you and saying, “We are part of the same group, and that gives us connection and makes us strong.” But what I badly desired was to grab the hand of someone across the world, from a different country, and say, “We are part of the same group.” I’m not rejecting patriotism; it’s just that I feel a connection and empathy with the human race in general, as much as I do with the people I share a continent with.
JULIA JACQUETTE ’86, artist

A patriot is a person who supports and defends the homeland and its Constitution from attack and/or abuse. The patriot challenges the abuse of power and those who trample upon the Bill of Rights. Patriots are not the people who wrap themselves in our country’s flag and espouse their political ideology or religious belief for gain while they concur with those in power who abuse that power and trample the rights of others.
JOHN MYERS, mechanical engineering technician, physics department
