Lynne Corby Caldwell enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, ages 4 and 6, who live nearby. She had a second knee replacement last May, and now one ankle is arthritic. It’s not much fun, but she manages to teach four classes a week, all to seniors, and participate in water exercises and aerobics. Lynne travels to Phoenix, AZ, twice a year to visit her youngest child.

Jean Kreger Carlson was pleased to read about Professor Henry Galant in a previous issue of Scope. It brought back good memories of the history and government classes she took with good friend Betty Toyese and of a 1962 visit with Professor Galant in Paris. Jean is working on election reform as a member of the League of Women Voters and Washington Public Campaigns, advocates of public campaign financing at all levels. She is encouraged by the Fair Elections Now Act now in Congress that would allow candidates to run a viable campaign with a mix of small donations and limited public financing. Alice Bemis Wiggin and Dick are grateful they were able to sell their Concord, MA, home in just three months and for a reasonable price. Now comfortably settled in a nearby retirement community, they are enjoying new friends and lots of perks. Alice is saddened, though, watching Dick’s Parkinson’s progress.

I had a long phone conversation with Florence Andresen regarding the Alumni Memorial Garden behind the Surrey Williamson Inn that she, Betty Hartz Hewitt, Marge O’Meara Storrs, Barbara Bigelow Roy, and Barbara Mansfield Saul have been maintaining since 2002. Each year they prepare and plant the garden in May and ready it for winter in October. Alumni from other classes tend the garden during the summer. Anyone wishing to honor a classmate with a donation for the garden should contact Mary Solomons at Skidmore: 518-580-5619.

Topsfield, MA, resident Linda Gorham Harvey enjoyed a short but wonderful visit with Sue Gordon Mize and husband Charles, who were passing through en route to a five-week trip in Maine this past June. Linda and Sue have known each other since grade school! Linda’s oldest granddaughter is a freshman at UVM.

Chick Glassey Ehbrecht and Adolph drove to visit Diana Brookfield Vollmer and husband Hank at their antique home in Ashley Falls, MA. They shared laughs and memories over a picnic before heading out to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra perform at Tanglewood. Diana and Hank enjoy visits from their three married sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Hank owns a spirits shop, and Diana has a consignment store. Chick is still in real estate and loves riding her horse (and winning ribbons) in hunter-pace events. She also enjoys being a garden club president, which allows her to learn more about growing everything, especially vegetables. Adolph stays busy with his computer. The couple’s three married children live near Boston and in Los Angeles, CA.

Jo Lyon Short and John celebrated their 54th anniversary with a three-week cruise up the Rhine and Mosel Rivers. Then they attended a family gathering at their youngest son’s home in Lake Tahoe, to celebrate their eldest son’s 50th birthday. Jo and John feel blessed with good health and the ability to travel the world.

Ingrid Kolseth Zola and Paul took a trip to Bermuda with daughter Laurie Zola Gendell ’81, husband David, and their children Alex, a sophomore at Duke University, and Erica, 17. The group stayed at the same resort where Ingrid and Paul honeymooned 53 years ago. The Zolas’ youngest son, Rob ’89, has three girls: 6-year-old twins and a 7-year-old. They live in Rockville Center, NY. Brad ’86, who shuttles between NYC and Florida, has two boys, ages 7 and 13, and a girl, 12. The Zolas’ third son, Greg, has a Web business, CarbonInteractive. He lives in Westport, CT, near sister Laurie.

Camilla Vilas Durfee and Giv have been in Washington, DC, for 16 years and still find it an exciting place to be. For the past eight years Camilla has taught English part-time to international students at Georgetown University. Her students are age 17 and up (average is 25) and come from more than 30 different countries. Camilla believes that they are appreciative of the program and return to their home countries as “wonderful ambassadors for our country.” Her passion for competitive rowing, primarily sculling (two oars per person) continues. The self-described “matriarch/old lady” of the masters group at the Potomac Boat Club, she brought home a double handful of medals from the national regatta in New Jersey this past summer. The Durfees’ five children are married with kids of their own and live in Los Angeles, CA, Jackson Hole, WY, Boulder, CO, Denville, NJ, and Hong Kong. There is always a welcome mat out for the 10 grandchildren—and for Camilla’s classmates! Nephew Jon Wurtmann ’78 and his family live in Saratoga Springs.

Bonnie Ward Wood and Ken moved across town to Heritage Harbour, a retirement community in Annapolis, MD. They live in a one-floor home with gardens and enjoy concerts, day trips, exercise classes, and indoor and outdoor pools. They did not have much time for travel this past year but spent a week in Delaware visiting their two daughters and three grandsons.
