Andrea Peterson Mauro’s son Addison studied piano and flute at the Mannes College of Music’s precollege division throughout his four years of high school. He was accepted into Skidmore’s class of 2012, but after much debate on the value of a strong liberal arts education versus following his passion at a music conservatory, he decided to attend DePaul University School of Music. Andrea says he’ll be in good hands, but “there goes the tradition.” Her daughter graduated last spring from Davidson College. Now that Andrea and husband Charles are empty-nesters, she can refocus her energy toward their Web-strategy consulting business.
Bev Harrison Miller and Wayne had a lovely summer evening in Vermont with Chris Filbin Hoffman and Frank. They went to an outdoor dance performance that Bev’s son Noah was in, followed by dessert at Chris and Frank’s house. Bev’s dog Duffy and the Hoffmans’ black Lab got along just fine. Bev’s daughter Brooke ’99 is still in her postdoc at Scripps Florida, investigating schizophrenia and depression. Noah recently moved to Northampton, MA, where he serendipitously met a fellow Dartmouth grad who has a start-up company, Groundcrew.com. Noah is now its chief developer, and the site just went live with its first client.
Janet Conathan Wrightnour received the Chamberlin Chair Award at Keystone College, where she is a professor and chair of social and behavioral sciences. Given for outstanding teaching, professional development, and contributions to the campus, it is Keystone’s highest honor for faculty members. Janet’s mother, husband, grandson, and niece Janet Reardon ’92 surprised her at the awards ceremony.
I am sad to tell you of the passing of nursing major Franne Levine Alter in August. Vicki Ansbacher Hosford shared that Franne was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer about a year ago and was courageous in facing her illness. Vicki said she was fortunate to visit with Franne last February. They reminisced about some of their Skidmore adventures and their friendship that had spanned so many years. We send condolences to Franne’s family.
We also lost Janice Ross Cullings, to breast cancer, in October. Bev Harrison Miller writes, “Janice was in my freshman dorm and was a friend of Janet Conathan, who shared her high spirits.” Our sympathies go to Janice’s family.
This past summer, husband Lani and I traveled to Glacier National Park in Montana, where our daughter Linden was leading trips for Backroads. Son Tony, who designs and manufactures jackets for young men, recently started a clothing company.
