Opportunity Funds
Purpose: The
President of the College and the Dean of Studies
provide small grants in support of worthwhile
student academic initiatives. Grants may be used
to defray the costs of materials and supplies,
for travel to a site critical to the project's
completion, for attending a conference (especially
when the student will make a presentation at the
conference), for preparing project results for
publication or display, etc. Grant amounts are
typically $150-$400, though we also have a few
larger grants available in the range of $700-$900.
The amounts of the awards always depend on the
total dollars available for each semester.
Criteria and Procedures: Applicants for
funds must be full-time matriculated students,
must demonstrate the merits of their proposed
project or enterprise, must describe its relationship
to the academic mission of the College (especially
as the activity will enhance the student's education),
explain the potential benefit of the project to
the larger Skidmore community, and provide a detailed
budget request. Funds may be used only for the
purposes designated in the application; any unexpended
funds must be returned to the College. Given the
limits on available funds, no summer projects
will receive grant support. Successful applicants
agree to file a brief report with the Office of
the Dean of Studies after completing their funded
activity.
Review Process: All applications for Student
Opportunity Funds should be submitted to the Office
of the Dean of Studies, Starbuck Center, Upper
Level, by the published deadlines for each semester.
Application materials must be typed and must
meet high standards of clarity and coherence to
be considered. The Office of the Dean of Studies
will forward completed applications to the Office
of the President. The President and the Dean of
Studies make all final decisions.
All questions regarding Student Opportunity Funds
should be directed to The Office of the Dean of
Studies.
