Skidmore College hockey breaks into national rankings

The Skidmore College men's hockey team is ranked 12th in the USCHO.com Division III national poll released Jan. 8. It is the first national ranking in the program's 28-year history. Skidmore is coming off a 4-2 upset of defending NCAA Division III champion Middlebury College on Jan. 5. The team is 7-3-2 overall and 3-2-2 in Eastern College Athletic Conference East play. 


Manhattanville College (10-0-2) is ranked first, Oswego (13-0-3) second, and St. Norbert (12-1-2) third.

Freshman forward Matt Czerkowicz leads the Thoroughbreds in scoring with seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points. Senior Rob Hutchison is next with 7-10--17 and freshman Anthony Ferri has 7-2--9.

Skidmore is ranked fourth nationally in NCAA Division III defense, allowing only 1.81 goals per game. Freshman goalie D.J. Delbuono has a 5-2-2 record with a 1.91 goals against average and .938 save percentage. He has the ECAC East Goalie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 7 for his 46 saves in the Middlebury win.

The Thoroughbreds will host a pair of games at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid Jan. 12 and 13 before returning home to play Plattsburgh State on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
