April events celebrate Pride Alliance, Asian Cultural Awareness Month
April events that celebrate diversity include activities coordinated by the Asian Cultural Awareness (ACA) Association, observing Asian Cultural Awareness Month, and events sponsored by the Skidmore Pride Alliance (SPA), in celebration of Pride Month. The schedule includes the following public activities:
Friday, April 13 – Queer as Prom
10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Falstaff's
Advance-sale tickets (available in Case Center) are $4; tickets at the door are $6.
Saturday, April 14 – Ping Pong Tournament
7 p.m., Wiecking Hall basement
Wednesday, April 18 – Day of Silence: an annual nationwide event to commemorate and protest anti-LGBTQ bullying, harassment, and discrimination in schools to echo the silence that LGBTQ students and allies face daily. All are welcome to join the commemoration by wearing black to make a visual statement as well. Click here for more information on Day of Silence.
Thursday, April 19 – Pride Month Keynote Speaker Jenny Boylan, 7 p.m., Gannett Auditorium
Jennifer Finney Boylan is best known as the author of She's Not There, which has been described as "an exuberant memoir of a man named James who became a woman named Jenny." Read more about Boylan Event co-sponsors are First-Year Experience, Speakers Bureau, and the Department of Psychology.
• 7-9 p.m. – “Future of Asia,” a panel discussion featuring Skidmore faculty. Emerson Auditorium. Refreshments will be served. The discussion will focus on the impact of globalization on China in the 21st century. Professors Monica Das, Mehmet Odekon, and Mao Chen are among those who will be on the panel.
Monday, April 23 – "Ally training"
8 p.m., Intercultural Center
Designed to increase awareness about some of the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people and to strengthen skills in people who wish to be a confident ally to the LGBT community and all people. Please contact Greta Spoering or Jim Ryan for details on running an Ally training for a specific group or class.
Wednesday, April 25 – Guest speaker Kate Rigg, performance and workshop
6:30 p.m., Davis Auditorium
A standup comedian, Rigg has appeared on various network and cable TV comedy shows and was profiled in the film Race is the Place. An award-winning artist, she has written and lectured widely on Asian-American culture and representation.
Saturday, April 28 – ACA Dinner
7 p.m., Murray-Aikins Dining Hall, second floor
Advance-sale tickets are $8 (available in Case Center); tickets at the door are $10. Hayat is co-sponsor of the dinner.
