Artist Regis Brodie is featured in summer exhibition on campus

 	 
 	 

Longtime Skidmore College art professor Regis Brodie will have a retrospective exhibition at the College’s Schick Art Gallery this summer. Regis Brodie: A Retrospective, featuring more than 40 years of work by the artist, opens Thursday, July 5, and runs through Sept. 23.

An opening reception will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 5 at the gallery. Earlier that evening, at 6 p.m., Brodie will give a lecture and demonstration in Gannett Auditorium, Palamountain Hall. Both the lecture and the reception are free and open to the public.

In an essay published in the exhibition’s catalogue, Roberta Griffith, Arkell Hall Professor of Art at Hartwick College, says of Brodie’s work: “When one takes an overview of Regis’ porcelains and sculptures, the nuances of development portrayed in the many variations of contour and surface treatment are clearly evident. To achieve these effects, which have been self-taught, Regis has developed and used a variety of clays, many forming techniques, and many processes. He carried out research using state-of-the-art industrial concepts as a basis of development. He transferred these concepts into the ceramic realm to develop his ideas and to build the ceramic studio at Skidmore College...”

Brodie joined the Skidmore faculty in 1969. For 36 years he directed the College’s Summer Six Program. He holds an M.F.A. degree from Tyler School of Art at Temple University, and earned an M.Ed. degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has received numerous awards in his field, including the 2004-05 Residency Program in Yeoju, Korea, an International Symposium for Outdoor Ceramic Sculpture sponsored by the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation. He was one of 10 ceramic artists chosen from five countries to participate. He also recently received a New York State Art Teachers Association Special Citation Award for significant contributions to the field of art education in the state.

His work is included in major national university and museum collections, including the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, Calif.; Nelson Museum of Art at Arizona State University in Tempe; Skidmore’s own Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery; and the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia. In addition, his work is in the corporate collections: Adirondack Trust Co., Saratoga Springs; Avon Products, Inc., world headquarters in New York City; Charles Wood Foundation Collection of Art in Glens Falls; General Electric Company in Schenectady; the Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Springs; and the Verizon Corp., White Plains, N.Y., among others.

The retrospective exhibition is made possible with support from Skidmore’s Office of the Dean of Special Programs.

Admission to the exhibition is free. Summer gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 2 The Schick Art Gallery is closed on Sundays during the summer and from Aug. 3 to Sept. 3 for vacation.
