Music lovers take note: The Tang is your summer destination

Music permeates Skidmore's Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery this summer. Both inside the museum and out, traditional, modern, and experimental sounds abound.

Inside the museum, visitors can sample sound art in the Tang’s Elevator Music series, where Andrea Polli’s “Atmospherics/ Weather Works” debuts Saturday, July 14, and remains through Dec. 30. Polli, an associate professor of film and media at Hunter College, is interested in the combination of art and science. Her Tang elevator piece is described as an audible representation of weather data obtained from meteorological and environmental scientists. The Elevator Music series “follows the Tang’s mission to find and create unique venues for art display,” said Tang graphic designer Patrick O’Rourke, who organized the sound-art exhibition in collaboration with the artist.

The museum’s popular Upbeat on the Roof series presents live concerts on the Tang’s rooftop patio at 7 p.m. Fridays through Aug. 31. Admission is free. The weekly concerts showcase a wide range of musical styles, from folk and bluegrass to Big Band swing to Brazilian romance, acoustic funk, and blues. In case of rain, the concerts take place indoors, in the museum’s Payne Presentation Room. Friday, July 20, will feature jazz standards, originals, and favorite cover tunes performed by Judy Joy Wyle and Azzaam Hameed; the rest of the Rooftop season schedule follows below.
