Luciano headlines Latino heritage celebration

?Identity and Power in the Latino Community,? the keynote presentation for Latino Heritage Month on campus, will be presented by Felipe Luciano, Emmy Award-winning news anchor, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Gannett Auditorium of Palamountain Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public. The month long celebration of Latino heritage is sponsored by Raices, the student organization dedicated to raising campus awareness of
issues associated with and relating to the Latino culture in and outside of the United States.

Luciano is one of the founders of the rap/hip hop movement, having performed and traveled extensively in the 1960s as a member of the Original Last Poets. He also is a founder of the Young Lords Party, a New York-based Puerto Rican-American organization launched in the 1960s.

Born in East Harlem, Luciano was the first Puerto Rican news anchor on WNBC; he also has worked in radio and print media. He twice won the Emmy Award for his reporting and contributes articles and essays to a variety of publications. Most recently he has been active in community causes and civil rights issues and often lectures on the importance of education as a tool for social change.

-Saturday, Nov. 3 - NYC Trip: Lunch at Rincon Centro Americano Restaurant, dance workshop with Alma Moyo, and the Off-Broadway Show, Celia.
-Tuesday, Nov. 6 - Felipe Luciano lecture, 7 p.m. in Gannett Auditorium.
-Thursday, Nov. 8 - Film screening, El Cantante, 8 p.m. in the Spa.
-Friday, Nov. 9 - Cultural Explosion Dancer at 10 p.m. in the Spa (co-sponsored by LateNight).
-Saturday, Nov. 10 - Caf con Leche Talent Show, 8 p.m. in the Spa.
-Friday, Nov. 16 - Latino banquet at 6 p.m. in the Payne Room of the Tang. Banquet After Party at 10 p.m. in Falstaff's (co-sponsored by Office of Off-Campus Study and Exchange).
-Tuesday, Nov. 27, Mountains Beyond Mountains lunchtime lecture series, noon, Intercultural Center
-Thursday, Nov. 29, Film screening: Akeelah and the Bee, 7 p.m. Gannett Auditorium.
