Flute festival to feature Schocker performance

Acclaimed flutist Gary Schocker will perform a program of his own compositions Friday, Nov. 9, in the Filene Concert Series at Skidmore. Schocker will be accompanied by pianist Hugh Sung, director of instrumental accompaniment and of the student recital series at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

The public performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Filene Recital Hall, as part of the Skidmore Flute Festival, organized by flutist and faculty member Jan Vinci. Vinci will perform with Schocker as a special guest during the concert. General admission is $5, or $2 students and seniors.

An award-winning composer with more than 100 compositions in publication, Schocker has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, and many other ensembles.

Winner of many awards and competitions, the flutist has toured and taught throughout the world. His latest recording is Healing Music, an Azica Records CD of his own works, with guest artists including classical guitarist Jason Vieaux, who performed at Skidmore last year.

Sung, who made his solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 11, has performed with numerous artists and ensembles, and has recorded extensively under the Biddulph and Vox labels.
