Catherine Golden, professor of English, this fall received a grant from the Stuart Rossiter Trust, a British philatelic society, for her book-in-progress titled Post It: The Victorian Revolution in Letter Writing.

Activities

Regina Janes, professor of English, delivered a paper titled ?Fielding and the Case of the Misguided Reader? earlier this year at a celebration of the tercentenary of the birth of Henry Fielding, ?Henry Fielding in Our Time: A Tercentenary Conference of His Birth,? held in London and sponsored by the Institute of English Studies at the University of London and the Middle Temple.

Catherine Golden, professor of English, presented "What You Can Tell About a Victorian Book by its Cover" Sept. 21 for the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Saratoga Springs.

Lenora de la Luna, assistant professor of education, recently presented an invited paper titled ?Literacy Assessment and the English Learner? at this year?s New York Association for Continuing/Community Education in Albany. She also gave an invited presention titled ?TESOLers for Social Responsibility: Socially Responsible Immigration Policy? last spring at the 41st annual TESOL Convention and Exhibition in Seattle.

Jay Rogoff, lecturer in English, presented a reading of poetry from his forthcoming book, The Long Fault, Nov. 12 as part of the Adirondack Community College Writer?s Project program.

Publications

Robert Foulke, professor emeritus of English, earlier this year published a detailed scholarly project: The Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History in four volumes, edited by John B. Hattendorf. The project includes everything related to the maritime world and covers art, music, literature, ocean racing, tall ships, and a host of other topics. As area editor for literature during the past six years, Foulke has been identifying appropriate scholars around the world for Oxford University Press to invite as contributors, corresponding with them and editing their articles, and writing four long ones of his own on Joseph Conrad, The Odyssey, an overview of sea literature, and the historical and literary roots of voyage narratives.

Catherine Golden, professor of English, is the author of "Marking Her Territory: Feline Behavior in 'The Yellow Wallpaper' " published in the Fall 2007 issue of American Literary Realism, Vol. 40, No. 1.

Regina Janes, professor of English, is the author of a review essay, ?Scandalous Empire, Scandalous Scholarship: Fables of East and West,? published in Eighteenth-Century Studies, Vol. 40, No. 2, (2006).

Penny Howell Jolly, William R. Kenan Professor of Liberal Arts and professor of art history, is the author of ?Rogier van der Weyden?s ?Pregnant? Magdalene: On the Rhetoric of Dress in the Descent from the Cross,? published in Studies in Iconography, Vol. 28 (2007).

John J. Thomas, professor emeritus of geology, and Karin Kirk (Montana State College) had their article ?The Lifestyle Project? published on the reviewed website, ?Science Education Research Center at Carlton College. The project was developed in their GE 101 Physical Geology course and adapted for ES 105, Field Studies in Environmental Studies. It challenges students to modify their lifestyle to decrease their impact on the environment and global warming.
