Award

Greg Hrbek, writer-in-residence, Department of English, has won the annual fiction prize from Black Warrior Review (University of Alabama) for his short story ?Sagittarius.? The story will appear in the Spring 2008 issue of the magazine.

Activities

David Domozych, professor of biology, was an invited seminar speaker Nov. 29 at the Molecular Biology program of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His talk, ?The extracellular matrix of Charophycean green algae: the evolution of the green plant cell wall and slime production in a world of biofilms,? was part of a mini-symposium dealing with algae and cell walls.

Susan Zappen, librarian, presented a paper titled ?Serials Assessment in the Online World: The Tangled Web? Nov. 7 at the 27th annual Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisition, in Charleston, S.C.

Sandy Baum, professor of economics, was a source for ?Who Should Be Ashamed??, published Nov. 15 on insidehighereducation.com, regarding implications of the proposed legislation to reauthorize the federal Higher Education Act.

Bob Jones, associate professor and chair, Department of Economics, was a source for a Post-Star story titled ?Arriving at home,? published Nov. 25. The story analyzed factors that attract young adults to this region.

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women?s studies and religion, was interviewed for ?At purity dances, virgin belles ring,? published Dec. 2 on chicagotribune.com, about an increasingly popular social tradition for conservative Christian families.
