Soccer team, athletes earn attention, honors

Skidmore's women's soccer team is ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas national Division III poll released Sept. 9.

The Thoroughbreds, ranked first in the New York Region, are off to a 4-0 start that included a 3-0 win at Oneonta State in the Sept. 7 Mayor's Cup championship game.

Skidmore has outscored opponents 10-1 over four games, allowing only 4.1 shots on goal per game. Senior Rachael Sushner and freshman Lauren Maddenare tied for the team lead in scoring with three goals and one assist each. Freshman goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) is 4-0 with two shutouts and a 0.28 goals against average.

The Thoroughbreds play Montclair State in the first round of the Wellesley (Mass.) Tournament at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

Liberty League honors

Field hockey players Christine Kemp and Liz Catinella, women's soccer goalie Sleezer, and golfer Sam DaSilva earned Liberty League awards for the week ending Sept. 8.

Kemp was the Co-Offensive Performer of the Week after scoring two goals for the Thoroughbreds in a 4-1 win over Williams on Sept. 6. Catinella was Co-Defensive Performer of the Week for recording six saves in goal in the victory over the Ephs.

Sleezer was named Rookie of the Week after recording two shutouts in the Mayor's Cup Tournament Sept. 6-7. She was selected tournament defensive MVP after shutting down Hartwick College 1-0 and SUNY Oneonta 3-0, stopping 10 shots during the two games. DaSilva earned Performer of the Week honors for an impressive first-place finish in the Tim Brown Invitational played Sept. 7-8 at the Saratoga Spa State Park Course. He shot an eight-under-par 136 to win the 12-team event. DaSilva opened with a six-under 66 that included seven birdies and came back with a two-under 70.

Two teams are home this weekend. The 15th-ranked field hockey team will host Ithaca College at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, and the men's soccer team will host SUNY Oneonta at 7 p.m. Saturday.
