5 Thoroughbred athletes earn Liberty League notice

After a successful week at home and on the road, five Skidmore athletes were honored with Liberty League weekly awards for their play during the week of Sept. 9.

Sophomore women's tennis standout Rachel Loeb started the fall season by winning the A Flight singles competition at the Mary Hosking Invitational at William Smith College. Chosen as one of two Performers of the Week, she defeated William Smith's Chelsea Rauck, 8-6, in the final match. She also advanced to the A Flight doubles championship, but fell to teammates Danika Robison and Laura Attley.

Carl-Eric Girardin led the men's tennis team to its second straight Flower City championship and also was named Performer of the Week. The sophomore won all three of his matches at number-one singles against Nazareth, Rochester, and Oneonta, and combined with Yahia Imam (Cairo, Egypt) to beat Oneonta in number-one doubles in the championship match.

Freshman forward Annie Rosencrans was chose league field hockey Rookie of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in key 2-1 win over SUNY Oneonta. Rosencrans poked in a goal with 6:54 left to cement the Thoroughbreds' victory. She also picked up an assist in a 3-0 win over Ithaca.

Sophomore Joe Flowers finished tied for second at the Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury College. The Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week shot a 73-74-147 to lead the Thoroughbreds, who were down by eight strokes after day one, on to victory with a combined score of 294-299-593.

Freshman keeper Nick Peterson helped the men's soccer team to two ties this week and was named Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week. He collected five saves in a 1-1 score at Utica, and four saves against Oneonta. Rookie Peterson has started all six games for the Thoroughbreds and picked up 27 saves overall to date. ~By Sytiva Seitz
