A weekend of victories for Thoroughbred athletes
The Skidmore College field hockey team fought to a 1-0 overtime victory over Liberty
League foe Union College Friday as the team improved its record to 4-2 (1-0 in conference
play).
Sophomore Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored a goal 1:03 into the first overtime period to put the
game away for the Thoroughbreds. The victory was bittersweet for Skidmore, as Union
head coach and former Thoroughbred field hockey standout Lacey French ?01 will be inducted into the Skidmore Athletics Hall of Fame Oct. 18.
Chris DeJohn (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led the men?s golf team to its third win in three tournaments
this fall at the Williams Invitational in Williamstown, Mass. DeJohn shot a par-71
on day two to finish tied for fourth place with a 76-71? 47. Sam DaSilva (Wyckoff, N.J.) tied for ninth with a 72-76? 148. The Thoroughbreds tied for first
with Middlebury College with a two-round 596, then won the tiebreaker.
In women?s soccer action, senior captain Rachael Sushner (Potomac, Md.) scored off a penalty kick with 18 seconds left to play to lead Skidmore
to a 1-0 victory over Smith College. The 17th-ranked Thoroughbreds also played to
a 0-0 tie with Middlebury to move to 6-1-1.
Women?s volleyball posted a 3-1 record over the weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y., at
the Liberty League Preview tournament. Skidmore opened with wins over Vassar (3-0)
and Clarkson (3-1) on Saturday, and added a shutout over St. Lawrence (3-0) on day
two before dropping the final match to Union College (1-3). Junior Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) was named to the all-tournament team.
Sophomore Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) knocked in the game-winner for the men?s soccer team as they downed Rochester Institute of Technology 1-0. The men are now on a four-game unbeaten streak, including another 1-0 win over Manhattanville College, where senior Pat Phelan (Wallingford, Conn.) scored a late second-half goal for the victory. Phelan and Kelsey both have three goals to lead the Thoroughbreds. ~By Sytiva Seitz
