Activities

Ray Giguere, Class of 1962 Term Professor and professor of chemistry, and John Weber, Dayton Director of the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery and professor of liberal studies, attended the "official" opening of "Molecules That Matter" Oct. 3 at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia. The CHF partnered with Skidmore to debut the exhibit last year at the Tang. Approximately 800 people attended the opening of MTM and another new exhibition at the CHF; Giguere and Weber also led a private tour of MTM for Skidmore alumni while in Philadelphia.

Phyllis Roth, professor of English, attended this year's annual general meeting of the Jane Austen Society of North America, which convened in early October in Chicago. While there she collaborated with Annette Leclair, librarian at Union College, on a presentation titled "Exhibiting the Learning: Austen's Legacy on Display," discussing the process and student learning outcomes of Jane Austen library exhibits produced by two classes of Skidmore students and one of Union's. A paper based on the exhibits and the conference presentation will appear in December in Persuasions online, the online journal of the society.

Marc Woodworth, lecturer in English and associate editor of Salmagundi, read from his new book, Bee Thousand (33 1/3) Sept. 30 at the Paradise Lounge in Boston. His presentation included a life-size anagram contest, trivia questions, and Dada-inspired collective poem-making.

Alice Dean, professor of mathematics, was featured in an Oct. 7 Daily Gazette story on the NSF-supported Skidmore/Union research project. The story was titled "Study to focus on recruiting, retaining female professors."

Steven Millhauser, Tisch Professor of Arts and Letters, is the author of an essay titled "The Ambition of the Short Story," published Oct. 5 in The New York Times Book Review.

Paul Calhoun, Harder Professor of Business Administration, was quoted in the following news stories on the U.S. economic situation: "Experts: Impact of bailout small for individuals," published Oct. 8 in The Saratogian; and "Economists: Inaction is dangerous," published Oct. 3 in The Daily Gazette.
