Key home events for Skidmore teams this weekend

The volleyball team will host the Skidmore Invitational Oct. 24-25 at the Sports and Recreation Center. On Friday, the 20-8 Thoroughbreds will play St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. and New Paltz at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Skidmore will play Cortland at 10 a.m. and Clarkson at 4 p.m.

The women?s soccer team will close out its Liberty League schedule at home this weekend. Skidmore hosts Clarkson at 3 p.m. Saturday and St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Liberty League cites four Thoroughbred athletes

For their play in the week ending Oct. 19, four Skidmore athletes received weekly recognition awards from the Liberty League.

Sophomore Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) led the Thoroughbred field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Castleton State and was named Liberty League Co-Offensive Performer of the Week. The goals were her seventh and eighth of the season, and the forward is now tied for the conference lead in points with 25 (8 goals, 9 assists).

Junior Keil Corey (Bristol, Vt.), the men?s soccer Co-Defensive Performer of the Week, scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 conference shutout at Union. He also led a Skidmore defense that did not allow a goal in two games during the week.

Freshman Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up men?s soccer Rookie of the Week honors after collecting two shutouts over the College of St. Joseph and Union last week. The goalkeeper made six saves in a 1-0 contest at Union, including one on a penalty kick, to give the Thoroughbreds the victory.

Women?s tennis freshman Allie Burns (Mequon, Wis.) won the number-three flight singles and number-two flight doubles at the New York State Championships and was tabbed as Rookie of the Week. She teamed with Rachel Loeb at number-two doubles to defeat Joy Backer and Krista Romita of Vassar, 8-6. In singles play, she defeated Vassar?s Jennifer Beckerman, 6-3, 6-4.
