Activities

Pushkala Prasad, Zankel Professor for Management in the Liberal Arts, delivered an invited lecture Oct. 13 at Radboud University of Nijmegen University in the Netherlands. The lecture, titled ?The Veil in the Nordic Workplace? was part of an annual lecture series on Gender, Identity and Work at the university.

Jane Raftopolous (biology '09), Camille Reuter (neuroscience '09) and Michelle Bossler (neuroscience '09) attended the 13th annual NEURON (Northeast Under/graduate Research Organization for Neuroscience) Nov. 8 at Simmons College in Boston. The students presented their research titled ?Influence of prenatal hormone exposure and sex on circadian wrist activity,? done with Denise McQuade, senior teaching associate in biology and principal investigator, to faculty and other students attending the conference. The trip was supported by Skidmore College Summer Faculty/Student Research funds.

Performances

Joel Brown, senior artist-in-residence, Department of Music, and his group Triple Play performed Nov. 11 at Hiwassee College campus in Madisonville, Tenn., as part of a series sponsored by the Monroe Area Council for the Arts. Sponsors of the performance included the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Southern Arts Federation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

?The Dome,? a short story by Steven Millhauser, professor of English, was read by actor Alec Baldwin during the Nov. 9 broadcast of Selected Shorts, the National Public Radio program that airs locally on WAMC-FM.

Daniel Hurwitz, professor of mathematics, was cited in a Nov. 6 blog titled ?Stolen election in Alaska? Five reasons why that accusation is premature,? on the results of the race for U.S. Senate between incumbent Sen. Ted Stevens and challenger Mark Begich, mayor of Anchorage.

Robert Turner, associate professor of government, was a source for several recent stories on the general election: ?Gillibrand?s stature likely to rise after win,? and ?Voter turnout drops locally,? both published Nov. 6 in The Daily Gazette; ?Locals analyze vote and wonder,? Nov. 6, The Post-Star; and ?Democrat rule may not mean easy ride,? Nov. 9, The Sunday Gazette.
