Black History Month celebration announced

Among the highlights of Skidmore?s Black History Month are the following February events:

Sandra Seaton?s one-woman drama, Sally, 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, in Bernhard Theater. The play explores the thoughts and feelings of Sally Hemings, purportedly Thomas Jefferson?s African-American mistress, through her diaries as imagined by the playwright. A question-and-answer period following the performance will feature playwright Seaton, director Robert Small, and actress Mizan Nunes. (Call the theater at 518-580-5431 for ticket information.)

A talk about history, writing, and diversity by award-winning children?s-book author Christopher Paul Curtis, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Gannett Auditorium. His latest novel, Elijah of Buxton, weaves a stirring tale about the first child born in a community of freed slaves in Canada.

The 16th Annual Ujima Fashion Show, 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Bernhard Theater, showcasing Skidmore students? fashion savvy and artistic talent. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

Food for Heart and Soul, courtesy of Ujima, 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Falstaff?s. Admission is $5 per individual and $7 per couple.

The Black History Month keynote lecture, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Gannett Auditorium. Poet, political activist, and hip-hop historian Kevin Powell will speak on ?Sexism from a Male Perspective.? His seven books include Who?s Gonna Take the Weight? Manhood, Race, and Power in America.
