Rangil edits book on Argentinean cinema

Associate Professor of Spanish Viviana Rangil is the editor of El cine argentino de hoy: entre el arte y la politica ( Argentinean Film Today: Between Art and Politics), a book that explores the connections between film as an art form and as a political force that can ignite social awareness.

"It can be said that the social and economic situation in Argentina from the early '90s to today is the best example, on a worldwide scale, of the failure of neo-liberal economic policies," said Rangil. "That nation's cinema is perhaps the best way to gauge this reality, which to some in the society is overwhelming and incomprehensible."

El cine de argentino de hoy introduces 12 articles, written in Spanish, by Argentinean as well as foreign scholars who study cinema for a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives therefore offering multiple ideological, disciplinary, and esthetic inclinations. "The authors share a passion for cinema, and they agree on its impact on society as a creative act of resistance and as a door towards a future in which alternative discourses on cultural practices become possible," said Rangil.
