Film fest to feature the multi-talented Jonathan Miller

An evening of films featuring Jonathan Miller, the multi-talented British physician, author, director, and wit, will be presented from 7 p.m. to midnight Thursday, March 20, in Emerson Auditorium, Palamountain Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

Presented in conjunction with Miller?s upcoming residency as the College?s 2008 McCormack Visiting Artist-Scholar, the mini-festival will include screenings of television interviews conducted by Dick Cavett and Charlie Rose on the subject of Miller?s acclaimed directing of a dozen Shakespeare plays; his lecture ?Vision in Relationship to Art?; and his youthful star turn in the innovative 1960s stage and film hit, Beyond the Fringe.

Miller?s career spans many different fields: author, lecturer, humorist, television producer and presenter, and director of theater, opera and film. Born in London, he studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and University College London, and worked as a hospital doctor for two years. In 1960 he helped write and produce the popular satirical revue, Beyond the Fringe, which launched the careers of Alan Bennett, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. In 2003, Miller was knighted for his services to the arts. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London and Edinburgh, and a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The spring 2008 McCormack Residency featuring Jonathan Miller will take place April 3-9 at Skidmore. The residency?s public events will be announced soon. While in residence, Miller will also meet with Skidmore classes, faculty and students.

Initiated in spring 2003, the McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar residencies are designed to provide total immersion for both the artist and the Skidmore community. Previous McCormack artists and scholars in residence have included noted author Michael Ondaatje, jazz musician Joshua Redman, and former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky, among others.
